He was the son of Mary Lorraine and James Delaney Buffett Jr.,
His grandpa, a steamship captain, introduced him to sailing when he was young, and these experiences impacted his subsequent compositions.
He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, in 1969.

Buffett served as a Nashville reporter for Billboard from 1969 to 1970. In 1969, he was the first author to report that the bluegrass duet Flatt & Scruggs had broken up.

Buffett started as a country musician in Nashville, Tennessee, in the late 1960s. His debut album, the country-tinged folk rock album Down to Earth, was released in 1970.

Buffett had a successful writing career in addition to his musical career. He also co-developed the now-defunct Cheeseburger in Paradise restaurant chain. He owned the Margaritaville Cafe restaurant chain, both of which were named after two of his best-known songs. Buffett was one of the wealthiest artists in the world as of 2023, with a $1 billion net worth.

When he was young, he experienced sailing across November 30, 2004, Buffett’s book A Salty Piece of Land was published, and the initial printing of the book came with a CD single of the song “A Salty Piece of Land.” Soon after its publication, the book became a New York Times best seller.[Reference required]

Swine Not?, Buffett’s most recent book, was published on May 13th, 2008.

The Jolly Mon and Trouble Dolls, two children’s novels co-written by Buffett and his eldest daughter Savannah Jane Buffett, are also available. The Jolly Mon’s first hardcover edition came with a cassette tape recording of the two reciting the narrative to a Michael Utley original soundtrack.
